Purfleet
Purfleet at the west of Thurrock has significant potential to be
a thriving business centre.
Purfleet today is a mainly residential area. Lying west of the
M25 and south of the A13, it is the closest of Thurrock’s
communities to London. To the west of the town lies the major Royal
Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reserve at Rainham
Marshes, and beyond that the London Borough of Havering.
Historically the village of Purfleet was an important military
location and a centre for chalk quarrying. In recent decades,
industry has developed along the river, where there are a number of
major sites, both occupied and in development.
Our ambitious but practical vision for Purfleet will create a
much stronger centre, making it easier for people to reach shops
and amenities and opening access to the riverside.
Purfleet is not only a good location but has the sites available
to make it realistic to develop the levels of new housing and the
amenities needed to give it new life and a real boost to
growth.
Outside the centre, Purfleet offers good opportunities for the
location of small and medium sized businesses. The proximity of the
Royal Opera House Production Park makes it particularly suited to
the creative and cultural sector. There are also sites which are
well suited to the assembly of a cluster of small businesses, such
as a science or business park development.
