East Thurrock
East Thurrock is a less densely populated area of Thurrock,
bordering on the neighbouring Basildon and Castle Point Boroughs.
The landscape includes large areas of marshland and historic
villages, with the key communities of Stanford-le-Hope, Corringham
and Fobbing. Close to the mouth of the Thames, this area has long
been the natural home of industry.
The nearby oil refinery at Shell Haven was traditionally a local
employer. This site is now being developed as the major new London
Gateway Port and logistics park; one of the key projects in the
Thames Gateway.
East Thurrock’s future is closely linked with London Gateway,
the UK’s largest capital investment today. A £1.5 billion
world-class deep-sea container port, currently being developed by
Dubai Ports, will drive change and development in the area.
Creating close to 14,000 new jobs it will bring a new focus and
life to East Thurrock.
Our vision is for a logistics park and Logistics and Transport
Academy on the site, to maximise opportunity and we also want to
integrate the port with the wider East Thurrock area by a new link
road to Stanhope Industrial Estate.
Our plans for East Thurrock see it benefit from new facilities,
including a new healthcare centre and a sixth form college near
Gable Hall school. Stanford-le-Hope town centre will be improved
with new shops, green links and a public square.
Around 700 new homes are planned, on sites within easy reach of
public transport. New transport links will make the area more
integrated and easy to navigate, while our plans make special
provision for new paths, cycle lanes and landscape
improvements.
Our proposals for East Thurrock also set aside key sites at the
former Gasworks and Essex and Suffolk Water sites; to attract new
businesses and create more high quality jobs.
