Capture the Spirit of Purfleet to win Top Prizes

Budding artists and photographers across Thurrock are being invited to take part in a competition to capture the true spirit of Purfleet.

The competition, which has been organised by Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation and sponsored by Veolia ES Cleanaway Mardyke Trust, is designed to celebrate the opening of the Veolia Mardyke Bridge.  The newly installed cycle bridge links Purfleet and the specially designed Sun Arch Sculpture to the neighbouring RSPB Rainham Marshes and visitor centre.

The competition is open to children and adults who live, work or study in Thurrock, from seven years old upwards.

Prizes include bicycles worth up to £250 each and £50 gift vouchers.

The competition will run from 19 April – 10 May.  Judges will be looking for inspiring images of Purfleet, imagination, originality and creativity through pictures, photographs and sculptures.

There will be a public vote from 17 – 21 May during which time shortlisted entries will be on display at Thurrock Learning Shop, George Street, Grays.

The winners will be announced at the Purfleet Community Event on 6 June with separate prizes for the 7-11 year old, 12-17 year old and 18 and over categories.

Commenting on the competition, Sunny Crouch OBE, Board Member of Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation, commented; “Purfleet has a very rich and varied history, community and landscape and we are looking for art that reflects its true spirit.

“From the wildlife at the RSPB and sophisticated life in riverside apartments to the creative life of the Royal Opera House Production Park and the industrial life of our working areas, Purfleet is many things to many people and we hope that this will be reflected by the entries to the competition.”

Speaking on behalf of the Veolia ES Cleanaway Mardyke Trust, Chair, Charlie Curtis, said; “The Veolia Mardyke Bridge has really opened up some great cycle rides and walks around Purfleet, it’s well worth a visit – and if you have a go you could win a bike!”
