An award-winning allotment plot in Thurrock has been made more secure by a grant from the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation’s Community Fund.

Belmont Allotments Association’s large plot in West Thurrock is now a safer community facility after its security fencing was extended.

The Allotments Association was formed in 2003 and regularly welcomes school and youth groups to the plots, which feature a community farm, dipping pond and two bird-watching hides as well as individual plots for gardeners and growers.

Brian Taylor, MBE, is one of the Association’s leading lights and he spoke with gratitude after the fencing was completed, saying: “The site has suffered from an increased number of break-ins of late which has resulted in plot-holders’ equipment being stolen. And of greater concern has been the fact that the community projects which we have worked so hard to create are now being targeted – with a number of chickens stolen from the community farm.

“Thanks to the Community Fund, we hope that will be a thing of the past and we will be able to carry out the valuable community work we do without fear of livestock being taken and produce and tools stolen or damaged.

“The immediate beneficiaries are, of course, the individual plot holders, but also local residents will now benefit from less anti-social behaviour taking place on site and those children that regularly partake in our activities will be able to continue to do so.”

Lois Bowser, Assistant Director of Delivery at the Development Corporation said, “The Belmont Allotments Association’s plot is a real asset to the local community.  We are delighted to have been able to ensure it is secure, and that the fantastic community programme it runs can continue to be delivered for the benefit of so many different local groups.”
