Announcement from the Development
Corporation
A recent Government review of Development
Corporations, concluded this month, has resulted in a long
term future being secured for the Thurrock Thames Gateway
Development Corporation’s regeneration work in Thurrock. The
review’s findings and conclusions were announced by Communities and
Local Government on Thursday, 14th January and the
Ministerial statement can be found on the CLG website here:
http://www.communities.gov.uk/news/citiesandregions/1432930.
The review, concluded in January, confirmed
that the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation –
previously a limited life body - will become part of the Homes and
Communities Agency (HCA) from April 2011. The statement said:
“The review has demonstrated
Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation (TTGDC) to be an
effective organisation well liked by its stakeholders and on the
point of delivering real change.”
This positive decision about the Corporation’s
future will mean we can benefit from the resources and expertise of
the largest regeneration agency in Western Europe and our work,
which was due to conclude in 2014 with the closure of the
Corporation, will now continue indefinitely. We will continue to
operate out of the Corporation’s existing offices in Thurrock,
retaining a local base in the Borough.
The announcement therefore provides a
framework for safeguarding the delivery of our major projects, such
as the creation of a new centre for Purfleet and the Royal Opera
House Production Park.
It also ensures the continuation of the
planning function of the Corporation, which acts as the local
planning authority for the determination of major planning
applications. This will ensure we can continue to move ahead with
plans for future projects vital for Thurrock’s economy, such as the
proposed expansion of the Port of Tilbury and at Lakeside and the
major new London Gateway port, which will benefit our local
economy, the Thames Gateway and the UK.
