Drapers Yard - TTGDC's decision reinforced by Secretary of State
17 July 2009
Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation’s (TTGDC)
decision reinforced by Secretary of State at Drapers Yard
The decision of the TTGDC to refuse permission for development
at Drapers Yard has been supported by the Secretary of State.
Fairview Homes originally submitted their plans to the
Development Corporation in March 2008. The plans included the
demolition of existing buildings on the site on London Road, Grays
and their replacement with up to 235 residential units at Drapers
Yard.
In January 2009 the Development Corporation objected to the
application on the grounds of poor design and not meeting the
aspirations of the Development Corporations’ Masterplan for the
South Stifford development area.
Fairview Homes appealed the decision and a Public Inquiry was
held in April 2009. The Inspector’s recommendation that the appeal
should be dismissed and outline planning permission refused was
endorsed by the Secretary of State.
A spokesperson for Thurrock Thames Gateway Development
Corporation said:
"This decision supports the concerns expressed about the
development from the outset. The Secretary of State’s decision
reinforces the importance of, and need for, good design in
Thurrock.
"The Development Corporation will resist poor development
proposals. It is important that proposed developments comply with
Masterplans to help realise the huge potential of Thurrock."
