Tilbury
Setting out the vision: Our master
plan for South East Thurrock is still in development. The master
plan had been broadly completed, but we extended public
consultation due to a new development opportunity proposed by the
Port of Tilbury. The plan is expected to be completed in
late 2009 and will form the basis for more detailed
development proposals, land acquisition and other actions.
The Port plays a vital
role in providing jobs in the area and is very important to the
local and regional economy. Both the Government and Thurrock
Council recognise the role of the Port and the importance of its
growth to the future regeneration of Tilbury and the wider Thames
Gateway.
The Port’s forecasts show
continued growth and it has made use of its land for quayside
operations as efficient as possible. The Port now needs to move
some of its quayside activities such as logistics, covered storage
and lorry parking to other land near the Port in order to maintain
existing jobs, create new jobs and enable the implementation of the
Tilbury Riverfront proposals.
The Port employs
approximately 650 people directly and 3,000 people are employed
within the defined Port area, on about 260 hectares of land.
Allocating an additional 26 hectares of land for Port related
activities could create over 500 new jobs in Tilbury.
We are in the process of
producing a Master Plan that will be brought to public consultation
in 2010.
