Industry Solutions
Thurrock has a long-established industrial tradition, stretching
back to the 19th century when its Victorian heyday saw many
companies start up along the river Thames and weekend visitors
enjoying its stunning natural environment.
With ports and river access to London and Europe - as well as
road, rail and air links to the whole of the UK and beyond,
Thurrock today is an ideal location for businesses manufacturing or
distribution either nationwide or across Europe. Competitive
exchange rates and labour costs only add to the benefits available
to a company locating here at the heart of the Gateway.
Finding solutions to energy and waste
problems
Thurrock’s industrial heritage means it is
vital for us to find solutions to local challenges such as waste
and carbon and particulate emissions. We have traditionally handled
waste from London in landfill but today we are seeking different
and better answers. Located in the Thames Gateway eco-region,
waste, transport and energy are all vital issues for Thurrock and
we are committed to providing those answers in new and imaginative
ways.
Recycling is part of the answer in Thurrock, where we are
strongly committed to waste management and 80% of our waste can be
recycled. A new recycling and reuse facility has just opened in
West Thurrock and we are actively seeking other waste management
technologies.
Green shoots from industrial
roots
Renewable energy has become an important part
of our local economy with a new green power station due to be
constructed in Thurrock. Tilbury Green Power will be a
biomass-fuelled station which will turn waste into power and feed
into the National Grid. Located inside the Port of Tilbury, it will
bring new employment, attracting high-level managerial and
technical skills.
We already have wind turbines in Thurrock and some sites – like
our local RSPB – have a turbine on site (funded by the Development
Corporation) as well as a ground source heat pump. We are committed
to looking at local and small scale energy options as well as at
energy efficiency solutions for new and existing housing, which are
vital for our future.
Local commitment, the availability of suitable sites – some
prepared and ready for development - with port access and our
established industrial base make Thurrock a first class base for a
range of environmental solutions businesses seeking to work with
industry and local government.
