Environment
Thurrock offers a range of new environment, energy and recycling
businesses – and is home to a number of large industrial companies
that aim to support.
Thames Gateway eco-region
The Thames Gateway Eco-Region programme was launched at the
Thames Gateway Forum in 2008. As an eco-region, the Gateway
would be an energy producer, not consumer and the home to
innovative eco businesses. Plans are underway to make it a zero
construction waste zone and to achieve net energy production.
Sustainability parks and campuses
A chain of universities, colleges and science parks surrounds
Thurrock, offering businesses ready links to innovation and
learning. East London institutions offering environmental related
courses include: the University of East London, Queen Mary
University of London and the University of Greenwich, while the
University of Essex and Kent Science Park are within close
reach.
Demand from large energy and industrial companies
The energy sector is already well established in Thurrock; a
range of major industrial and energy companies on the Thames
riverside have natural demand for environmental services. The
advent of the major new container London Gateway port will bring
further demand.
In addition, plans to replace Tilbury Power Station with a state
of the art, low emissions, carbon capture facility will encourage
the development of other environmental technologies.
Overall, we anticipate substantial growth in:
- production and distribution of electricity;
- environmental consultancy;
- environmental pollution research and experimental
development;
- waste collection and;
- recycling and disposal.
