About us

Thurrock Thames Gateway DC was formally established by Statutory Instrument on 29 October 2003, following a period of public consultation.

Thurrock Thames Gateway DC is one of the delivery bodies envisaged in the Sustainable Communities Plan, published by the Department of Communities & Local Government (DCLG) (formerly ODPM) in February 2003. This plan sets out the Government's objective to deliver successful, thriving and inclusive communities for all.

The plan identified four key growth areas focusing on Ashford, Milton Keynes, Stansted/M11 Corridor and the Thames Gateway, with the plan stating that the Government would:

"... set up bodies with a clear remit and the necessary powers to drive forward development. The arrangements will operate with the full engagement of key local players and partners including the private sector and will offer locally tailored means to deal with the land assembly, master planning and local infrastructure to help secure comprehensive regeneration."

As part of this broad delivery agenda, the Government set out proposals to establish an Development Corporation (DC) in Thurrock, to oversee the regeneration and development of the Borough. The Thurrock Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order also determined the organisation's operational boundary as being co-terminous with that of Thurrock Council's.
